The magnificent setting of the four-storey 14th Century Abbey Gate in Bury St Edmunds makes a fitting starting point for the Suffolk leg of the Tour of Britain, following in the footsteps of countless pilgrims throughout history.
As one of the county’s most celebrated market towns, Bury St Edmunds is well known for its beautiful gardens and remarkable heritage; combined with contemporary high-quality restaurants and cafes, boutique shopping, weekly markets, luxurious hotels and brand new concert hall, the Apex, opening this autumn, the town has much to offer. Bury St Edmunds is also home to the sole surviving Regency playhouse in the UK, the Theatre Royal, the imposing Cathedral and Greene King Brewery with its own Visitor Centre.
From here, it’s a short journey to the architectural flight of fancy, Ickworth House. This National Trust property, with its dramatic rotunda, houses a fascinating history and exquisite collections of art and antiques, all surrounded by beautiful gardens, ideal for exploration.
The route then heads south westwards, through Haverhill, which dates back to pre-Roman times, and onwards to the towns of Clare, Cavendish, Long Melford and Lavenham, that share a unique place in the history of textile manufacturing. During the medieval era, they grew wealthy on wool, rising to prominence and power. Collectively known as Suffolk’s Wool Towns, their distinctive half-timbered architecture and timelessness attract thousands of visitors each year. Lavenham, itself, boasts over 300 listed buildings, including the beautiful 16th Century Guildhall of Corpus Christi.
As the birthplace of one of England’s most celebrated landscape painters, Sudbury’s setting in the heart of the beautiful Stour Valley provided endless inspiration to Thomas Gainsborough during the 18th Century. The fine buildings of this traditional market town, reflecting its prosperity in the weaving and silk industry, today house great shops and restaurants. And with surrounding countryside and meadows, Sudbury is the ideal stop-off for a restful break.
